It is beyond dispute that a multitude of people are living in large apartment buildings in metropolises nowadays. Whilst it is argued that apartments might bring residents some benefits, I believe that this choice is likely to have more unexpected drawbacks than living in stand-alone houses (single-family home, detached house).
On the one hand, there are some possible reasons as to why living in apartments might be enjoyable and beneficial. First, given that apartments are reasonably priced, citizens are able to save up a wealth of money for their future use. Indeed, whilst buying a single-family home might cost buyers a huge sum, purchasing or renting an apartment is considered as a considerably economical alternative. Second, apartment buildings are normally situated in the vicinity of amenities and facilities such as educational institutions, hospitals, central business districts, gymnasiums, parks, etc. As such, residents might find it convenient and comfortable when living in an apartment.
On the other hand, there are a multitude of convincing explanations as to why it is inconvenient for inhabitants to live in apartments. For example, people are forced to literally share their spaces with other strangers. They need to share the facilities such as small gardens, parks, or gyms with others. Notably, the spaces around their apartments are also shared. As such, they are surrounded by other residents. As a result, they easily get distracted by noises from others such as noises from babies, dogs, or parties. Whilst life today is seen as hectic and harsh, people can easily get annoyed and frustrated, especially when they are taking a nap or having a good sleep at night. Therefore, residents no longer feel a sense of privacy and their apartments are not seen as a quiet and tranquil place that can be used to unwind after a long day at work. On the grounds that apartments are not able to provide residents with a good living condition as such, I believe that living in apartment buildings is not regarded as a good option.
In conclusion, whilst apartments might be the accommodation of choice for many people, there are an abundance of plausible explanations as to why apartments might trouble residents. I therefore believe that the potential drawbacks of apartment buildings vastly outweigh the benefits that they offer to residents.
