The crime rate nowadays is decreasing compared to the past due to advance technology which can prevent and solve crime.
Do you agree or disagree? (Academic Test, 2017)
It is no doubt true that technology can help to alleviate crime problems today. Whilst there are some possible reasons why this is the case, I also believe that technology also allows people to commit crimes from their homes under anonymity.
There are some plausible explanations why technology is beneficial for reducing the crime rate. First, on the grounds that documents are shared in secure private clouds, it is easier for police forces to check the validity of official documents such as driving licenses or passports. This enables both the police and the citizens to save their time. Second, the use of cameras such as dash cams or body cams also helps save lives, reduce complaints, and helps careers. For example, when the citizens and the police know that cameras are in use, they would be more mindful of their behavior. Third, drones are increasingly utilised to reduce the crime rate. They are able to get quickly into tight spaces and are used to record illegal activities, aid in rescues, document crime scenes, help find missing persons, and other applications.
On the other hand, technology, unfortunately, could also give rise to cybercrime in which online criminals use computer and other electronic devices to harm people. The internet, therefore, is used as a tool to approach their prey in today’s society. For example, the use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter might enable would-be and professional online criminals to perform harmful activities when online users are inclined to share too much information on the internet such as home addresses, photos of family members, or photos of the fancy sports car they have just purchased. Furthermore, criminals could also carry out the phone and email scams in which these smooth talkers attack their prey using various methods such as phishing or spoofing. For phishing, online criminals aim to gain access to private information such as banking numbers or social security numbers. With regard to spoofing, they use false phone numbers that are always changing to conduct these illegal activities.
In conclusion, whilst there are many convincing explanations why technology are generally useful in dealing with crime, I believe that technology is a double-edged sword. Accordingly, technology could also become a big playground for online criminals.
